Find the source first

Being roofers, we look up as well as down. A leaking gutter, a gap in the flashing or a cracked chimney can soak a wall from the outside, and no treatment inside will last while that keeps happening.

Once the source is sorted, the damp itself can be dealt with and the wall left to dry out. Plaster that has been wet for a long time may need hacking off and redoing once it has dried, and it helps to know that before the job is priced.

Where damp usually comes from

• Rain getting through the roof, chimney or flashing
• Overflowing or leaking gutters and downpipes soaking the brickwork
• Damp rising from the ground where there is no working damp course
• Condensation from cooking, washing and drying clothes indoors

Signs of damp

• A tide mark along the bottom of a wall, or salts coming through the plaster
• Wallpaper lifting or paint bubbling in one area
• A musty smell in one room
• Black mould in corners and behind furniture
