Fascias, Soffits and Guttering

The roofline, all in one go

Fascias, soffits and guttering are on our vans because they're part of the roof. The fascia is the board along the bottom edge that the gutter hangs from, the soffit closes the gap underneath it, and the gutter carries every drop of rain off the roof to the downpipe.

When one of them goes, the others are often the same age, so it's worth having all three looked at together.

Why a gutter matters more than it looks

An overflowing gutter pours water down the same patch of wall every time it rains. Over a winter that can soak through brickwork and show up inside as damp, which is why damp proofing and guttering often turn out to be the same job.

Signs it is time

• A sheet of rain coming off the gutter edge in a downpour instead of going down the pipe
• Paint peeling off timber boards, or soft wood you can push a key into
• Green streaks or damp patches on the wall under the gutter
• Nests, or gaps you can see daylight through, where the soffit meets the wall
